Our Poor, Sad Fence

Well, the fence blew down in the wind storms last Tuesday. Not all of it, mind you, but enough this time that we can't just patch it back together. This fence has been the bane of Mike's (and then my) existence since it was built. The builders did a horrible job with it. It's an 8-foot tall fence which should have posts every 6 feet - minimum. They put posts every 8 feet. These are also wooden posts and apparently some of them aren't actually in concrete. So, needless to say whenever it's windy the fence rocks back and forth, and now over time has completely fallen over. For years now we have lost a section and put it back up, lost another section and put it back up, and so on. It's conceivable that we could have put it back up this time if the posts had held up - but we lost 4-5 sections and the posts snapped off at the base.

Today we have a company starting a retaining wall on the side of the house. They aren't actually building the entire wall, they are building onto the existing retaining wall so that we can finally level out the yard. It has a crazy slope to it right now. Then next week the fence company will come in and begin our beautiful new masterpiece of a fence. The new one will be board-on-board (for privacy because we have a pool), METAL posts every 6 feet (maybe 5 if we can afford it), pre-stained clear cedar and 8 feet tall. I cannot possibly tell you how utterly excited I am about this whole thing! I've been driving by this fence for years and muttering to myself, "stupid fence!"


Yesterday Mike & I put up some lovely orange caution fencing and Mike broke the fallen fence sections into smaller pieces. We then placed the smaller sections against the remaining fence on the side of the house in order to keep the rest of it from falling over.
